Tasks for Mr. Whirrett's Classes
Week 2 of the Coronavirus: March 23-27
These are the things for you do to do for Mr. Whirrett's classes for this week. You should check current events and do novel reading EVERY day... but for the other five tasks you may pick which day to do each task. You may do them in any order, but you should make sure to do one a day. Why do we do these things, and what do they have to do with school and history class? Everything! A major part of social studies is the study of citizenship and the responsibilities that go along with being a good citizen. This includes caring for others and our surroundings. Some of these tasks will be based on service to others which we can connect to our citizenship and social studies, history, and geography, but they are also a big part of our faith and our school mission.
Look up Matthew 6:26. What does God say about the birds? Look outside and watch the birds for a while. What are they doing? Do they seem more sad today than two weeks ago? Or do they still continue on? How should we respond to things that have changed for us in the last two weeks? What does our Heavenly Father promise us?
Also, our school mission statement:
St. Paul's Lutheran School exists to educate each child in a Christ-centered environment for a life of service to God and man.
What would be better than using some of our time away from our school building than to learn to be better citizens and to fulfill the reason our school is there... to learn and prepare for a life of service to God and man?
At the end of the week, do a Flipgrid Video and post it...
Report on your five tasks and report on the following:
1) One current event and what you thought. Remember to give as much information as you can... when, where, why, what you think, etc.
2) Tell what book you're reading and what chapter you are on (and anything exciting happening in it if you want.)
3) Tell what new thing you learned or one rewarding experience for you doing one of the five tasks. Be specific... we want details!
THIS WEEK:
1. Every day check current events. I have a link... but you also may use your own source. The newspaper, the tv news, or a website.
2. Every day do a little reading in a novel. You may choose to listen to your novel via audio book instead.
3. Do this week's five tasks, in any order, one per day:

2. Every day do a little reading in a novel. You may choose to listen to your novel via audio book instead.
3. Do this week's five tasks, in any order, one per day:
TASK ONE:
KEEP EXERCISING! For week 2, remember to stay active. If you can get outside... do it! Go shoot some baskets for a half hour. Go on a jog or run. Take a bike ride. Or go climb a tree! Get out in the weather... even if it's chilly. Notice God's creation and stay active! |
TASK TWO:
NEW PLACES TO CLEAN Clean the laundry room, basement, or garage. Ask your parents what you can do to get one or more of these places "back in shape." Maybe you already know what to do and you can surprise them. In the garage, get all of those fall leaves out of there. In the garage or basement clean any windows. Vacuum up the cob webs. Organize any storage areas. |
TASK THREE:
DINNER FOR A NEIGHBOR OR SHUT IN You made dinner last week. Now, do it again... with a choice of making it for your family OR for an elderly neighbor, grandparent, or shut-in you know of. Maybe you just want to make them a special treat or dessert. That would work! (Make sure you get permission to do this.... and make sure you are extra careful about not passing on any germs. Great hand washing before and during preparation is a must! Also, maybe you leave it on their front porch or by their door with a note... and ring the door bell or knock before leaving.) Maybe make another shut-in card or note to go with it. Share a favorite Bible Verse. Tell the person why you care about them. Make it special... and heartfelt... and make their day in these times that can be very lonely! If you make a meal, make sure the meal has the different food groups in it. Breads, meats, vegetables and fruits, dairy, etc. If you have a brother or sister in middle school with you at St. Paul's, this could be a group project or a family project! |
TASK FOUR:
THANK YOU LETTER This week's letter is going to be a THANK YOU LETTER to someone who you do not know (or at least who you are not related to and you don't get to talk to very much)... but who you are thankful for because he/she/they is/are helping us get through this pandemic situation. You could write a letter to our police or fire department. You could write a letter to our Mayor or Governor, or to our State Legislature, Congress, or President You could write a letter to our military. You can find addresses for these places online. You can address it to a group of people (like to all of Congress) or to one particular person (like Congressman Jim Banks, our Congressman). Tell them that you know they do not always get thanked for their work, but that you know they are working hard and you are thankful for the things they are doing to keep us safe. Feel free to tell them who you are and where you go to school. If you do not want to use your address as a return address, feel free to use St. Paul's address: 1125 Barr Street, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46802. You could include a card or a picture, or simply type or write your letter on paper. Make sure you write neatly and check your spelling. If you want, give your address and ask if he/she would like to write back. |
TASK FIVE:
KEEP LEARNING FOR LIFE! Ask your parents to teach you something you have never done before... SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN LAST WEEK, and learn how to do it. Then, do it again completely on your own. This could be anything.... but should really be something you didn't really know how to do before. New Examples: 1. How to write a check. 2. How to groom a pet or give it a bath. 3. How to change a diaper. 4. How to use your photos to make a photo album or a shutterfly book. 5. How to trim bushes. 6. How to paint a room in your house. Previous Examples: 1. Doing the laundry.... washing, drying, folding, putting away. 2. Loading and running the dishwasher... putting soap in, setting it, and putting dishes away. 3. Cooking or baking something you did not know how to cook or bake before. If you use this in your dinner... do this one BEFORE you do the dinner-making task. 4. Change the oil on your parents car. 5. Pump the gas at the gas station and pay. Do it once with your parents. Then do it on your own while they sit in the car. 6. Pick something else you'd like to learn how to do.... and learn to do it on your own! |
