Today is Tuesday, February 12. It is an ICY Day outside... so we get to do some E-learning!
You should do the E-learning TODAY and submit in the form below, OR write your answers on a sheet of paper and turn the paper in to Mr. Whirrett first thing tomorrow. An extra credit point will be given for your history grade to all students in Mr. Whirrett's classes who are able to do this by the start of school on our next school day, either on this form TODAY or by paper TOMORROW! If you sometimes think you have submitted it on here, but Mr. Whirrett does not always seem to get it, then just write your answers out on paper and turn them in. (Certain people have had issues with this and I do not know if your Internet is the issue or if you are not pressing a button that you need to press. Some people's work is ALWAYS submitted correctly, while others say they submitted - which may be true - but it doesn't always come through for them. Either way, you need to find a way to get the answers to me to get credit. Renweb will tell you if you have it done because an incomplete message will come to your parents if I don't have your work.)

ENGLISH-LANGUAGE ARTS
For English/Literature today, we would be having some in-class work time on preparing for your speech. Because we are not in the school building today and you cannot work with a partner, you need to spend some quiet time doing this on your own at home. Your speech should be written (a few of you still need to show me your written speech!), and you should have begun to memorize. In fact, you should be close to having it memorized and now just be practicing your voice inflection and fine tuning. Go in your room or a closet... a quiet place all to yourself... and practice, practice, practice! Practice in front of a mirror. Practice until you can say it without looking at your paper. This e-learning day is a PERFECT chance to really make headway on your speech. Practice by yourself for at least an hour today. Aim to get to the point where you can say your speech three times in a row without looking at it! And if you find that you are not at this point yet, then you know you need to keep working. Again, today is the PERFECT gift of a day for that. When you think you are ready, challenge yourself and give your speech to your brother or sister or parent. If someone is home during the day, do it for them when you're ready. Or, do it when they get home from work. And remember the old saying: "Practice makes perfect!"
U.S. HISTORY
Next Monday is Presidents' Day. But how did we get Presidents' Day? Or is it President's Day? Or Washington's Birthday? Or Washington and Lincoln's Birthday? What is the official name? Well, watch this video and learn about a great American holiday, how we got it, and some other cool facts that we sometimes don't know. Then answer the following questions.
Answer the following questions and submit them on the form below. You should do the E-learning TODAY and submit, OR do it on a sheet of paper and submit it tomorrow. An extra credit point will be given to all students who are able to submit it by the start of school on the next school day, either on this form TODAY or by paper TOMORROW!
As you watch the video, PAUSE it to answer the questions... or watch the whole thing once, then go back through it a second time to get the answers.
1. What year was this National Holiday started?
2. Who was President at that time?
3. What did he want? (Hint.... he always wanted it to be on whose birthday?)
4. What date was that?
5. What did they call the holiday when it first began?
6. What happened in 1968?
7. What are the disagreements over Presidents' Day?
8. What four "options" do people call this National Holiday? List all four... and make sure you SPELL THEM CORRECTLY!
9. How do stores traditionally celebrate the day?
10. Find one store in Fort Wayne and give me a specific example how they are celebrating. You can listen to a radio ad, watch a tv ad, look in the newspaper, look online, or go to a store and look at a sign they have posted. (HINT - you might want to check out furniture stores, appliance stores, and car stores.) List specifically what deal they have for customers connected to next Monday.
11. How do many schools and all post offices celebrate this day?
12. List your top three favorite Presidents and WHY you admire these leaders.
By doing this e-learning assignment TODAY, you are making it so that next Monday, on Presidents' Day, you can enjoy the day off, on a day when you remember our Presidents. Who will you remember? Just President Washington? Or Washington and Lincoln? Or some of your favorites? Or ALL our Presidents! Maybe one day it will be YOU we are thankful for as our President of the United States.
