6th Grade E-Learning
Day Five: February 15, 2019
Coming up on MONDAY, we celebrate PRESIDENT'S DAY!
We are very proud that we have a PRESIDENT in the United States! Rather than be ruled by a King, we elect our leader every four years. Someday, YOU could be this leader! But how did we get to the point of getting rid of the king and having a President?
Watch this Schoolhouse Rock Video about NO MORE KINGS!
Watch this Schoolhouse Rock Video about NO MORE KINGS!
After watching the video, answer the following questions:
1. What is Taxation without Representation? (Try to explain what that means.)
2. What is one thing the King taxed that the people didn't like?
3. How did the people respond to being taxed? (What was the "party" called?)
THEN we had a Revolution and fought against the British. The war started in 1775 and lasted EIGHT long years. We almost lost many times! But in 1783, we signed the Treaty of Paris and WE WERE A FREE COUNTRY! Then, a few years later, we wrote the U.S. Constitution, an amazing document we still use today! The Constitution sets up our three branches of government. We have the Legislative Branch (Congress), the Judicial Branch (The Supreme Court), and the Executive Branch (the Presidency!). This is how we got the President. We honor all of our Presidents on President's Day. February is the month in which we have President's Day, as many President's were born in February, including two of our greatest President's: George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We are thankful for ALL our Presidents, even ones we don't always agree with. We have a country where we peacefully change from one President to another, and are proud of that.
4. Who was our first President?
5. Who is our current President?
6. Who was our last President?
7. Tell why having a President is much better than having a King.
8. Would you want to be President someday? Tell why or why not. Make sure you explain.
Extra Credit: List all the Presidents who have birthdays in February! You might have to do an Internet search to find the answer.
ANSWER ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS IN THE FORM BELOW, OR... answer then NEATLY on a sheet of paper and turn in to Mr. Whirrett on Tuesday. Thank you!
